Character Name: Vala Mal Doran
Series: Stargate SG-1
Age: 35
From When?: After Stargate: Ark of Truth
Inmate/Warden: Warden
Item: A trinket-y necklace from her father. Just to piss her off.
Abilities/Powers: None. Vala's a normal human. She's decent in hand-to-hand combat, and is a very good shot.
Personality: Vala's difficult to understand. She's a lot of things, really, but understanding who she is at her core is tough. She's mischievous, curious, scheming, manipulative - ethically challenged is a fantastic way to describe her. Vala has spent most of her life doing morally gray things - she's stolen, cheated....she still cheats, actually, don't play cards with her. But when it comes down to it, she has a moral compass that she follows - though it isn't exactly the clearest of devices.
Vala likes shiny things. She likes them a lot. Treasure hunting? That is her biggest talent, and she is usually good enough to cheat her way through making deals to get away with everything she wants. That's something else she's very good at: getting what she wants. Usually. Sometimes. When SG-1 doesn't ruin all her fun.
There's the persona Vala gives off, and then there's the person she really is. To the outside world, she's upbeat, bouncy, and fairly fun-loving. She tends to put positive spins on negatives, and though she isn't your on hand optimist, Vala really isn't the type to sit and brood, even when things go very, very wrong - and they have. She gave birth to a daughter that stood as a figurehead and leader for her enemies. Things have been unpleasant in the past - Vala knows it doesn't do to dwell.
Freedom is important to her; Vala spent several years as an unwilling host to the Goa'uld Qetesh, and after she was freed, was tortured by those her symbiote ruled over. The ability to do what she wants, when she wants, how she wants, is something she doesn't like losing, and will fight for - though not in the traditional sense. Because while Vala is a very good fighter, both hand-to-hand and with ranged weapons, she is a better actor, and an even better manipulator. When things go poorly, she doesn't start a fight. She plays the cute, non-threatening card, and tries her damnedest to work things out in her favor.
Under everything - possibly - is a strength that isn't frequently seen. Bra'tac once said she spoke with the wisdom of a hardened, experienced warrior, and though she's certainly lived through a lot, that is far from an accurate description; but Daniel corrected him by saying that she was a mother, and that was close enough. Vala conceived without doing any of the necessary bits; even knowing that her daughter was potentially a pawn of the Ori, she was ready to be a mother. Maybe. Despite being denied the chance to be a mother to her daughter, Vala really isn't the adorable, childish figure she tends to come off as. Most people just don't get to see that.
Path to Redemption: --
History: And now I cheat. :| Here is an excellent summary of her history.
Basically, Vala has a questionable background: her father was a jerk who was rarely around, but who Vala took after in a lot of treasure-hunting ways despite disliking everything about him. Her mother died when she was young, she had a bitch of a step-mother - who she named her daughter after - and may or may not have been sold into a sort of indentured servitude that served as her 'formal' education - which was completed when she killed the man she'd been handed off to and won her freedom.
Did I mention Vala will lie or embellish whenever necessary?
For some time as an adult, she was taken as host for the Goa'uld Qetesh, freed, tortured, and freed again. She spent her time after that treasure hunting, stealing, bartering, and stealing some more. That was how she met with SG-1: she stole one of their very large and lovely mother ships to use in a trade. That was foiled, of course, but it was only the start of a long and sort of beautiful relationship with Stargate Command and SG-1.
Sample Journal Entry: All right Bargians! Barge dwellers? Barge people! Hello there. [Have a big, flirty kind of smile.] I'm Vala Mal Doran, and I'll be working here with you lot for a bit. [She leans in, very hush-hush like.] Now how long does it usually take, redeeming an inmate? I figure a week or two then tch [She makes a quick gesture with her thumb, pointing off screen.] Back home with the prize. Yes? Well! I've just got one more question for you all. [The smile is back.]
What's a girl got to do for a tour?
Sample RP: She really had no idea what she was getting into here. It had been a good deal, though! Spend some time on an interdimensional ship of some kind, and come home with riches beyond measure. She'd been very particular about that - Riches beyond measure. So long as it didn't have a silly psychological pay out - she didn't need yet more lessons to learn. No, she'd been very careful to make certain that riches beyond measure meant jewels and gold and treasure.
Of course, now she just had to find herself an inmate and redeem him. Or her. Really, there was no telling what her inmate would be like, was there? She wasn't sure what would be best, either - though 'young and handsome' should really be at the top of the list, of course. That wouldn't be problematic at all.
Well. Maybe a little problematic.
But really, it must be easier to redeem someone when you got along! There were only a handful of people she would balk at working with, really. All right - more than a handful, but there were two in particular she absolutely did not want to see on this ship.
The idea of having to redeem Ba'al - she suppressed a shudder - or worse yet, her daughter, was almost unthinkable. She didn't particularly want to consider Adria being stuck here for eternity - and Vala couldn't imagine it being any less than eternity, given her, well - dedication to Origin.
It didn't do to dwell on that, though; there was a ship to explore, hide-aways to be found, treasure to be liberated...Really, she was going to have quite the busy schedule.
